Admission Ticket, published 29th May 1784 (printed). Subscriber's ticket for a Handel Centenary Commemoration held in Westminster Abbey in 1784. A central ovoid design, featuring a woman and cherub next to Handel's tomb, framed with foliage and a banner. Etching and stipple engraving. Designed by Robert Smirke (1752-1845). Engraved by Francis Haward (1759-1797). England. 1784. The Commemoration, marking the 25th anniversary of the composer’s death, was a series of concerts of Handel’s music during which two performances of Messiah took place. ED Mackerness described the Handel Commemoration as “the single most important event in the history of English music” (A Social History of English Music, London 1964). Messiah was given its first performance in O’Neal’s Music Hall, Fishamble Street, Dublin in 1742. Plate size: 25.5 cm high x 19 cm.
