Catherine Mary Wood (1857 - 1939), Alias: Mrs Catherine M. Wright; was a painter of still life, flowers and genre. She studied at the Royal Female School of Art. In 1889 Catherine became an associate of the Society of Women Artists and in 1893 a full member. In 1882 she married the artist Richard Henry Wright (1857 – 1930). She exhibited extensively over 40 years. Oil on Canvas board, framed size: 47cm high x 38.5cm.

Gladford North Norfolk


William Eric Thorp PS, RSMA (1901 - 1993) He studied at the City of London School under the drawing master Herbert Dicksee and at the Royal Academy Schools. He was the youngest member ever to be elected to the Artist’s Society at the age of seventeen, joining the Langham Art Club in 1917 and also a member of the London Sketch Clubs and Chelsea Arts Club; A founder member of the Wapping Group in 1947 becoming President for six years from 1966-1972. Thorp exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Pastel Society and the Royal Society of Marine Artists. He showed at the Paris Salon and elsewhere. His work is in permanent collections at the Guildhall Art Gallery, National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and the Imperial Institute.  Oil on board: framed size: 32cm high x 37.5cm

Girl on a Country Lane 


John Stuart Corbett (1845 - 1921) was a solicitor and antiquary. Corbett's chief recreations were painting and gardening. The National Library of Wales has a number of pictures by John Stuart Corbett and a Sketchbook of Llanfachreth views by him. Oil on canvas in a period frame, framed size: 34cm high x 44.5cm.

Portrait of a 17th Century man 


Lajos Kolozsváry (1871–1937) was a Hungarian Painter whose works were exhibited in the Műcsarnok (Art Gallery).
Kolozsvary was born 1 March 1871, Budapest, Hungary  and trained at the Viennese Academy under the distinguished Austrian portraitist Christian Ludwig Griepenkerl and August Eisenmenger. From 1891 on he was based in Budapest where he enjoyed popularity for his humorous genre scenes, often featuring figures in interiors. The permanent collection of the Landes museum in Münster, Germany contains several of his works. Oil on board in a birds eye maple frame. Frame size: 28cm high x 26cm.

Mountainous Landscape with trees


William Duff Murdoch (active 1899–1925) was born in Dumfries-shire. Painter in oil, occasional pen and ink, also pencil, of portraits, figures and landscapes. He trained at Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art and Slade. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Philip Augustus Gaugain (1791-1865). Born London 17 May 1791 (baptized 12 June 1791), son of Thomas and Maria Gaugain. A freemason at Royal Gloucestershire Lodge (No.212). Known for his portraits. Exhibited at Royal Academy, British Institute, Society of British Artists, Free Society and Sussex Street, between 1783- 1847. Passing Showers


Arthur William Redgate (1860-1906) was a landscape and figure painter. He painted the countryside of his native Midlands. He became a member of the Nottingham Society of Artists in 1881. Arthur lived in Nottingham in 1880; Castle Donnington 1886 and West Bridgford, Notts. 1893.

Summer: Three Horses and a Foal


Thomas Charles Bale (1831-1899), artist in oil and cleaner and restorer of paintings. He was the son of Thomas Bale, basket maker, and his wife Johanna. He was born in Islington in 1831, married Sophia Price in the Camberwell district in 1857, when he was described as an artist at 74 Dean St, Soho, and died, age 67, in the Fulham district in 1899. Exhibited Sussex Street. Oil on canvas singed with monogram. Framed size: 48 cm high x 61 cm.

Ships in a Choppy Sea


Thomas Westcott (Exh. 1900 – 1903) was a marine painter who lived in Ipswich. He was a member of the Ipswich Art Club. Thomas exhibited 14 works between 1900 and 1903, the titles included “Off the Doggerbank”, “Beating to Windwood“ and Wrecked on the Shipwash Sands” (all 1901). Oil on canvas. Framed size: 43.5cm high x 50.5cm.

William Hughes (British, 1842-1901) a still-life painter. Hughes studied under George Lance and W. H. Hunt. He was an active exhibitor from 1866 to 1901, showing in London at the Royal Academy, British Institution, Grosvenor Gallery, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Royal Society of British Artists, the latter society which elected JW its President in 1886, as well as at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery. Camille Antoine Arnoux, Solon (1877-1960), Muralist and ceramist Camille Solon was born March 27, 1877, in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. A descendant of the Arnoux family, master ceramists in France, Camille was one of nine children born to Louis Marc Solon and Laure Arnoux Solon. Camille studied under his father and in London at the Slade School and University College. Oil on canvas. Framed size: 59 cm high x 72 cm.

Hely Augustus Morton Smith RBA FRSA (1862–1941) was a Painter of marine subjects, portraits and flower studies in oil and watercolour.
He studied at the Lincoln School of Art and at the Antwerp Academy. Hely became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) in 1902 (Treasurer 1902); Artists' Society (Treasurer); Langham Sketching Club, and the St Ives Society of Artists (STISA) 1934-41. Tree and house


Oil Painting by Camille Antoine Arnoux, Solon (1877-1960); Muralist and ceramist Camille Solon was born, in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. Portrait of an Old Lady


17th Century oil on canvas laid on board, Framed size 29.5cn high x 26.5cm.
According to an old label verso: Attributed to Simon François (1606 – 1671), called Simon François de Tours or Le petit François, who was a French painter and engraver. He was under the patronage of the queen and cardinal Richelieu. Simon travelled to Rome from 1632 to 1636, and became a friend of Guido Reni, who did his portrait. He was court painter and accepted as a member of the academy on 7 August 1653. There is also an ownership label dated 1694 for Monsieur Du Coudre Fenneur ou Fenneur

Through the Trees


John Frederick Pettinger (1877–1939) was born in Yorkshire in 1877. He studied at the York School of Art and the London College of Art. He began working at the Leicester College of Art in 1904, teaching classes in figure composition, painters' and decorators' work and painting and drawing from life. From 1919 he was part of the newly formed Department of Drawing and Painting, Decoration and Design. In 1931 this was altered to the Department of Draughtsmanship and Painting, and Pettinger was made Head of Department. He retired in 1933, however, and died in 1939 at the age of 62. Exhibited 1904-1934, Birmingham City Art Gallery, Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery, New English Art Club, Royal Academy. Oil on canvas laid on board. Framed size: 52cm high x 61.5cm.

William Manners R.B.A. (1860-1930) was a painter of landscapes and rural genre in oils and watercolours. Born in Bradford, and lived in that area until about 1900, later he moved to Westmoreland, and the Lake District. The Furness Countryside provided subjects for many of his landscapes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1893. Oil on Mill board. Framed size: 39.5cm high x 50cm.

In the Classroom



John Thomas Peele RBA (1822-1897) Painter of genre scenes (particularly of children), landscape and portrait pictures. Born in Peterborough, though At the age of twelve he emigrated to America with his parents in 1834, they settled in Buffalo where he began painting. Peele studied in New York and later worked in Albany for two years as a portrait painter, after which time he then returned to New York and was elected a member of the National Academy of Design. He married Sarah Alice Elliott in England in 1844. In about 1851 he came to London where he remained except for short stays in Liverpool and the Isle of Mann. Exhibited works at Suffolk Street, the Royal Academy (between 1852-1891), and the British Institution. He had many patrons in both Britain and America, most notably Prince Albert and Frederick Church the landscape painter. Oil on canvas, in a period frame. Framed size: 112.5cm high x 87.5cm.

The Forsaken Nest


James Clarke Waite (1832-1920), studied at the Government School of Design, Newcastle upon Tyne; the Scottish Institute, Edinburgh; the Royal Academy School, London; and for a year in Paris. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1863. After becoming well known in the north of England as a genre painter, he moved to London and Australia. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1873. Waite was an early member of the Australian Artists' Association and joined the Victorian Artists' Society at its inception in 1888. Exhibited: Royal Academy; Sussex Street; Sydney International Exhibition; Victorian Artists' Society; Athenaeum Gallery, Melbourne. His work is represented in both British and Australian galleries. Alex Louis Martin (1887-1954) was a painter of figures and portraits. He was born 1887 in the Carnieres, Hainaut, Belgium. Alex Louis Martin was a student of the Academy Royale des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, where he won the Gold medal; The Institute Superior, Antwerp; and he also studied in the School of Decorative Arts, Paris, in 1914. His portraits can be found in Town Hall in Couillet and the Morlanwelz museum, Belgium. Peter Kuhfeld (b. 1952)
Peter Kuhfeld is an English painter of portraits, landscapes, garden scenes, cityscapes and interiors. Peter Kuhfeld studied painting at Leicester College of Art and The Royal Academy Schools under Peter Greenham. Andrés Cortés y Aguilar born 24 December 1812 in Saville, died 16 May 1879. He was a Spanish painter representing Romantic landscaping and Andalusian customs. He was a member of painters of the Sevillian school. His works can be found in the following: City Council of Seville, the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao, the Museum of Madrid, the Bellver Collection of Seville, the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum (Malaga) and the Cathedral of Segorbe. Anton Ebert (1845 – 1896) was born 29th June 1845 Mies (Bohemia) in the Chateau de Kladrau, died in 1896, Vienna. He was a renowned genre and portrait painter, who worked in Vienna in the 2nd half of the 19th century. He studied at the Prague Academy and at the Vienna Academy in the class of the famous F. Conway Marsh


William E. Harris (1860-1930) was a Birmingham painter in both oil and watercolour. He moved to Windsor and then to Broadway Worcestershire by 1893. Exhibited at the Royal Academy; Institute of Oil Painters; Royal Society of British Artists; Birmingham; Grosvenor Gallery; Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; Manchester City Art Gallery; Royal Hibernian Academy; the Royal Scottish Academy. Herbert William Wright (1912-1989) is a painter in oil and watercolour of genre, landscapes, architecture and nudes in representational style. He was born in Walsall (West Midlands) on the 9th August. Educated Queen Mary’s school: studied at Dudley Training Collage and at Bournemouth College of Art. He exhibited from 1945 exclusively in London. In the 1950s he spent time painting in France. From 1952 he worked intensively in and around Avingnon. Livery member of Painters and Stainers; City Freeman; member of the City Livery Club; Guild of Freemen; A.G.B.I. Steward for City (1977); Member of the Chelsea Art Society. Almunecar, Spain. 1957


John Alfred Haggis (1897-1968) Portrait, landscape and figure painter in oil and watercolour. Born in London, Haggis studied art in Australia and at the Royal College of Art under Malcolm Osborne. He showed widely, including Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; the Royal Academy; Royal Cambrian Academy, Birmingham City Art Gallery, Royal Institute of Oil Painters; Royal Scottish Academy. The Old Attorney or Scribe


After Franz Meerts or Frans Meerts (Ghent, 1836 – Brussels, May 1896) was a Belgian painter and aquarellist known for his interior scenes, genre scenes, still life and landscapes. He was also active as an author, publisher and copyist. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent. Meerts later moved to Brussels, where he attended the private art studio of Jean-François Portaels. Meerts was commissioned by the Belgian government to travel to Spain and Italy to copy the works of the great masters. Meerts was the co-founder of two artist associations in Brussels. L'Union des Arts and the Voorwaarts. Voorwaarts exhibited in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels. For more than twenty years, Meerts was the director of the Art Academy of Soignies. Aslan D’Abro Pagratide (1848-1928) 
Alas: Prince Aslan D’Abro Pagratide; Aslan D'Abro.
Born in Smirne, Turkey, 31 August 1848; he died in Naples in 1928 at the age of 80.
Armenian of noble origins, received his first artistic education in London. After moving to Naples, he studied at Naples at the Institute of Fine Arts. Aslan obtained on 14 February 1892 the recognition of the title of prince and was named President of Asilo Regina Margherita of Posillipo. His works were exhibited in numerous exhibitions both in Italy and abroad and in 1900 he had a professorship at the Institute of Fine Arts, later he was appointed vice president of the Palizzi industrial art museum.
